NPO Start krijgt op desktops en laptops een nieuwe feature: samen kijken. Mensen kunnen met maximaal vier computers tegelijk naar een archiefvideo kijken en elkaar per webcam zien of chatten.
De technische proef vloeit voort uit het veranderde kijkgedrag tijdens de lockdown voor het coronavirus. NPO herkent dat zijn publiek vaker, langer thuis zit maar toch behoefte houdt aan sociale contacten. Samen televisie kijken in deze nieuwe setting is strikt genomen niet mogelijk, maar er wordt gekeken of dat met technologie is te verhelpen.
NPO.nl/Samen brengt de kijker naar het algemene, niet-betaalde deel van NPO Start. Dat biedt toegang tot het reguliere videoarchief, maar met een klein verschil in de interface. Rechts boven in het videoscherm staat een ‘Kijk samen’-icoon. Een klik daarop levert een deelbare videolink op.
De ‘organisator’ van de kijksessie nodigt zijn medekijkers vervolgens uit via kanalen als mail, chat en Whatsapp. Als iedereen de webcam aanzet, verschijnen de live huiskamerstreams naast het beeld van de tv-uitzending.
NPO zoekt uit hoe het samenkijken zo laagdrempelig mogelijk kan worden gemaakt. Een mogelijke hindernis is bijvoorbeeld dat er een grote brei aan geluid ontstaat als alle kijkers hun audio te hard hebben staan. Ook kunnen de kijksessies verstoord raken door technische drempels als lag of latency.
In NPO Samen wordt samengewerkt met technologiebedrijf Sceenic, dat vorig najaar als één van de drie winnaars uit de bus kwam bij de Innovatie Challenge rond het Eurovisie Songfestival. Die wedstrijd werd gehouden om vernieuwende interactieve toepassingen te vinden.

Watching television together in this new setting is strictly speaking not possible, but we are looking into whether this can be remedied with technology.
NPO.nl/Samen brings the viewer to the general, unpaid part of NPO Start. That provides access to the regular video archive, but with a slight difference in the interface. At the top right of the video screen is a "Watch Together" icon. A click on it yields a shareable video link.
The "organizer" of the viewing session then invites his viewers through channels such as mail, chat and Whatsapp. When everyone turns on the webcam, the live living room streams appear next to the TV broadcast image.
NPO is looking into how to make viewing as accessible as possible. A possible obstacle is, for example, that there is a large knit of sound if all viewers have their audio too loud. The viewing sessions can also be disrupted by technical barriers such as lag or latency.
In NPO Samen there is a collaboration with technology company Sceenic, which was one of the three winners last fall in the Innovation Challenge around the Eurovision Song Contest. That competition was held to find innovative interactive applications.
